A vital learning center that helps children in the Palmdale reach their full potential has been dealt a devastating blow by criminals. The Brain Balance center in Palmdale was the target of an intentional arson fire on May 19th, forcing it to temporarily close and leaving families distressed about disruptions to their children’s critical services. In this article we talk about Brain Balance Learning Center Targeted in Los Angeles County.
The Arson Attack
According to ABC7, surveillance footage captured the harrowing scene as a hooded individual knelt in the bushes outside the business located just off the 14 Freeway on Rancho Vista Boulevard. Smoke can be seen billowing up before the suspect walks away, the smoke quickly intensifying into flames that spread and damaged the building’s exterior.
“I came to the scene and my place of business was on fire,” recounted a shaken Yomaira Gonzalez, the owner of the Palmdale Brain Balance center. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze before it reached the interior, but not before the side of the building was charred and the inside suffered smoke damage.
Sadly, this was not an isolated incident. “Just that same day there was two other fires within 40 minutes. Three total within 40 minutes in this area,” Gonzalez stated, suggesting the attack on her business was intentionally targeted by the arsonist or arsonists.
Rising Security Concerns
Even before the arson, the learning center had been the repeated victim of break-ins amid a spiking crime trend Gonzalez says has plagued the area since the pandemic. “We’ve always had issues with criminal activity, arson, crimes but post-pandemic it just started, it became more of an issue.”
The fire was the last straw for the overwhelmed business owner. “I’m still concerned about the safety and well-being of my students and my staff. I think that’s the main thing and I really don’t know if my business is going to survive,” Gonzalez glumly admitted about having to potentially shut down permanently.
Disrupted Lives, Derailed Progress
For the families served by Brain Balance, the potential closure could be devastating. The center provides specialized, drug-free programs designed to help children overcome challenges with focus, behavior, social skills, anxiety and academic performance.
“It’s sad because, my son, right now I can see the decline of him not coming to the center,” said client Rebecca Okongo, whose 5-year-old son had been making strides in the program for two years before it abruptly shut down. “Honestly I have been looking for so many services and this has been the main one that has helped my son.”
Other parents echo the fear of their children’s hard-fought progress being rolled back without access to Brain Balance’s resources and teaching methods aimed at unlocking their full potential.
A Senseless Crime’s Harsh Toll
The unconscionable arson attack was a senseless crime, rendering a building uninhabitable and upending the lives of countless area families already struggling to provide their children with the special care and education they need and deserve.
As law enforcement investigations into the incident and suspected connections to other area arsons continue, the real victims are the students robbed of their safe learning sanctuary through no fault of their own. All due to the destructive, reckless actions of criminally misguided individuals.
Brain Balance and similar facilities are invaluable community assets that must be protected, not persecuted. The children they serve are the future leaders, thinkers and trailblazers of tomorrow who need every opportunity possible to thrive today.
